1950年代后期，中国掀起了大跃进运动。上海里弄的家庭妇女们也响应号召，积极参加。居委会戴妈妈（陈立中 饰）全力支持她们，而解放前受尽苦难的刘大妈（范雪朋 饰）不同意儿媳王彩凤（张瑞芳 饰）参加，要求她在家相夫教子。儿子刘根发（温锡莹饰）却不同意妈妈的观点，支持妻子的行动。郑宝卿（孙道临 饰）是个典型的大男子主义，他也不同意妻子蔡桂贞（沙莉 饰）参加生产组，但蔡不顾反对，把家事理清，还当了缝纫组长。戴妈妈帮蔡桂贞一起做郑宝卿的思想工作，使他认识了自己的错误。陆阿凤（汪漪 饰）由于怕缝纫组借她的缝纫机而违心参加了缝纫组，但当缝纫组为儿童福利院赶制棉衣时，她羞愧难当......。A descent into Hell is triggered when "Ex-Lord" Donald Brocklebank finds that he must leave Longleigh House for London to find a way to pay for the medical treatments for his wife Nancy.
