繁华都市的苍凉一隅，破破烂烂的拆迁房旁边，鬓发斑白的老肖（吴坚 饰）独立经营着一个颇显寒酸的早点铺。老肖曾是一名在老山前线光荣负伤的英雄，回到家乡后，温柔的妻子和刚出生不久的儿子给他带来无限的自豪与喜悦。他的儿子肖大宝在很小的时候便展现出过人的天赋，其才能甚至引起国家领导人的关注。可惜，青少年时期的大宝（肖央 饰）却变成《伤仲永》似的人物，他整天打架、弹琴、泡妞，让爱之笃深的老肖丢尽颜面，羞愧交加。
